Noguera, Carter, Edwards Honored by Horace Mann League (HML)

Pedro Noguera has been named the Horace Mann League’s Outstanding Friend of Public Education.  A noted sociologist and the Peter L. Agnew Professor of Education at New York University (NYU), Noguera has focused on how schools are influenced by social and economic conditions.  He has addressed issues such as education policy, school reform, conditions affecting student achievement, race and ethnic relations, community development, and youth violence.  Gene Carter, selected as the 2015 HML Outstanding Public Educator, recently retired after 22 years as executive director of ASCD.  He served for nine years as superintendent of schools in Norfolk, Virginia, and was named the very first National Superintendent of the Year in 1988.  Carter led ASCD’s international expansion and launched an effort to ensure that schools and communities pay attention to needs of the whole childMark Edwards, Mooresville (NC) Graded School District superintendent, 2013 National Superintendent of the Year, and 2012 HML president, will receive the Outstanding Friend of the Horace Mann League AwardAll are scheduled to be honored during the Horace Mann League’s Annual Meeting and Luncheon, 11:45 to 1:30 p.m., Friday, February 27, 2015, at the Marriott Marquis in San Diego.

The Horace Mann League’s nearly 600 members include distinguished educators and thought leaders who are devoted to the principles of a sound public education for all students.

During the San Diego meeting, HML will install new officers.  Charles Fowler of New Hampshire will become 2015 president; Christine Johns-Haines of Michigan, president-elect; Martha Bruckner of Iowa, vice president; and Gary Marx of Virginia, immediate past-president.  Jeff Charbonneau of Washington state will be installed as a new member of the League’s Board of Directors.

Ambassador Awards, based on membership recruitment, were scheduled for presentation to:  Brent Clark of Illinois, Martha Bruckner of Iowa, Charles Fowler of New Hampshire, Christine Johns-Haines of Michigan, Gary Marx of Virginia, Evelyn Holman of New York, Laurie Barron of Montana, and both James Harvey and Steven Webb of Washington state.

Among previous recipients of the Horace Mann League Outstanding Friend of Public Education Award are:  Marian Wright Edelman (2014), Sen. Mark Warner (2013), Jack Jennings (2012), Diane Ravitch (2011), Michael Kirst (2010), John Goodlad (2009), and Jonathan Kozol (2006).  Those who have received previous HML Outstanding Public Educator Awards include:  Larry Cuban (2014), Thomas Payzant (2013), Kenneth Bird (2012), Phil Schlechty (2011), Harry Wong (2010), Linda Darling Hammond (2006), and Julie Underwood (2005).

HML’s 2015 president, Charles Fowler, is a longtime school superintendent who is currently president of School Leadership LLC and executive secretary of Suburban School Superintendents.
