Roles and Responsibilities for the Field-Based Internship
The University supervisor, intern and district mentor plan the internship cooperatively. The following are the individual responsibilities:
Intern
o Notify the Director of the Administrator Preparation Program of intent/timeframe to begin internship.
o Secure official commitment of school district support for the year-long internship (Internship Agreement)
o Submit Administrator Preparation Program Application. Receive written approval from the Heritage
Administrator PEAB before beginning the internship.
o Develop and review the Self Assessment and Field Experience Plan with the mentor and supervisor.
o Develop a planning calendar with mentor determining selected activities and projects that meets the
requirements of each Performance Criteria.
o Register for the Internship PRIOR to each semester. (Ed. 573-principal; Ed 597-program administrator)
o Attend all four (4) required seminars.
District Site Mentor
o Maximize the amount of release time for the intern to insure a quality administrative experience and provide
release time for the four (4) Intern Seminars that are required attendance for the intern.
o Share organizational goals and plans for site-level projects appropriate for student’s involvement aligned
to the Performance Domains.
o Collaborate with student and University supervisor in confirming quality plans for activities, projects, duties,
and responsibilities the student can carry out within the time available in the student’s schedule.
o Monitor field activities to assure students are making satisfactory progress toward the required 720 hours.
o Provide the variety of experiences the student needs to achieve the knowledge, skills, and dispositions
identified for the Internship (WAC 181-78A-270).
o Meet with the University supervisor every 4-6 weeks during the internship to review progress and plan
future activities for knowledge and skill development.
o Notify the University supervisor immediately if the intern’s progress is not satisfactory.
o Confer regularly with the intern regarding evidence of progress on their internship (Minimum Criterion
Performance Checklist and Intern’s Activities Log).
o At the end of the internship, sign-off on Minimum Criterion Performance Checklist, Intern Log, and
Administrator Intern Evaluation requirements (WAC 181-78A-270).
University Supervisor
o Assure district mentor understands the expectations for the internship: 720 hours which should
include at least 100 hours at a different educational level; intern’s required attendance at 4 seminars.
o Arrange 8-9 site visits with the intern and the district mentor.
o Maintain a record of visits , Performance Domains discussed, agreements reached, and recommendations
made using the University Supervisor’s Intern Visitation Log.
o Respond to intern’s and mentor’s questions or concerns. Assist with revision of intern plan as needed.
o Counsel and advise intern on any aspect of the internship as requested by intern.
o Cooperatively plan and attend all seminars during the year.
o Monitor intern’s progress through reading reflection papers, reviewing the internship log , and other projects
to be completed during the internship experience.
o At the end of the internship, sign-off on Minimum Criterion Performance Checklist, Intern Log, and
Administrator Intern Evaluation requirements (WAC 181-78A-270).
Heritage University Education Administration Program Chair
o Serve as the intern’s overall program advisor.
o Manage the total internship experience program, including identification of candidates, approval procedures,
requirements and assignments, seminars, grading, and final certification procedures.
o Assign and monitor the University supervisor’s work with students during the internship.
o At the end of the internship, sign-off on Minimum Criterion Performance Checklist, Intern Log, and
Administrator Intern Evaluation requirements (WAC 180-78A-270).
