Now for the next steps toward the internship:
Download the timeline for the internship. This will give you a schedule as to when to expect things to occur. The four intern seminars are required so when these dates get set, clear your calendar. These sessions help to provide the 16 credits you need in the internship. The first seminar will be held in August in Western Washington at the AWSP building in Olympia; for Moses Lake/Wenatchee/Omak at Big Bend Community College; and for Yakima/Tri-Cities at the Yakima Heritage site. At the first seminar, you will meet your supervisor, get all the materials to begin the internship, are provided with information for your district mentor, begin some activities that are part of the internship, and see some samples of previous interns’ portfolios.
In the year-long internship (August-June), you are expected to start with your mentor when they return to the building in early August. Beginning and ending school experiences as an administrator are required by law thus you can’t just begin when the teachers are required to return. You will log a minimum of 720 hours of your activities during the internship, develop a portfolio that demonstrates evidences of your leadership activities to meet the state requirements for certification. This certification will be for K-12, so the university will encourage you to have at least 100 hours at other building sites and various grade levels. Your district mentor, university supervisor, and you will meet monthly to review what you have accomplished, sign off on completed competencies, and discuss future activities. You should plan to meet at least weekly with your district mentor (set a formal time for this meeting to take place or you will find that it will not happen).
Download a copy of the required minimum performance competencies for the internship. These are the state and university’s requirements. This document will give you an idea of the type of experiences you will have during the internship. You will be beginning a very busy time in your life BUT a very rewarding experience. We at Heritage University look forward to helping you grow professionally and become one of the future administrators. Please contact the Director of the Administrator Preparation Program if you have any questions.
