Board Meeting, February 18, 2005, San Antonio
Called to order by President, Spike Jorgensen at 7:05 a.m.

Roll Call:

Spike Jorgensen, John Simpson, Walt Warfield, Larry Dlugosh, James Anderson, Richard Christie, George Garcia, Fred Hartmeister, Douglas Otto, Susan Purser, Steve Rasmussen, Jerry Sellentin, Colleen Wilcox, and Jack McKay

Past Presidents: Jane Hammond and Art Stellar

Host: Rob York — Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, Advanced Academics

1. Minutes of the June 26, 2004 meeting in Boulder, CO. were approved.

2. Membership:
The membership totals were reviewed by Jack Mckay.  The HML database was purged of individuals who had not paid dues for two years. Membership declined about 200 members from 1140 to 943.

3. Recruitment of New Members:
Strategies for recruiting new members was reviewed by Jack McKay.  Nomination letters are developed for potential members (from the AASA attendees), signed and mailed by the state representative.

4. Budget:
Revenues and expenditures for the 2004 were reviewed.

5. Legal Issues:
Current legal issues were reviewed by Fred Hartmeister.

6. Report on Foundation and Corporate Relations
Progress report was presented by Art Stellar and Jane Hammond. Questions to be resolved:
What do we need the additional funding for?
What foundations or organizations are most likely to support our purpose/vision

7. AASA Distinguished Lecture Series:
Plans are for next year’s AASA meeting.  Suggested persons were Theodore Shaw, John Shelby.

 

8. Traveling Display:
The first draft of the traveling display was presented by Colleen Wilcox and Jane Hammond.  Suggestions included: one picture, one quote, picture of diversity,  “Just as noble today as 150 years ago.”

9. Recognition of Lifetime Members:
Plans are to feature two or three lifetime members in each newsletter.

10. Distribution of “The Art of Teaching”
Continue to send to new members and to school libraries

11. Membership Survey:
Draft of survey was presented by Walt Warfield and Jerry Sellentin.  The survey will be distributed and returned online.

12. Distribution of Horace Mann Poster:
Reported that additional posters are available to officers and directors.

13. Distribution of Monograph to Members:
Larry Dlugosh reported that the monograph, “Things that Work in Public Schools” was mailed to all members in September.

14. New Publication:
The monograph on “Schooling” was reviewed by Jack McKay
It was suggested that a book be considered about the “Value of Public Education.”
Spike Jorgensen and Larry Dlugosh will develop a process for consideration at the summer meeting.  Other suggestion was “Grading the States,”   Suggested authors included Jane Hammond, Larry Dlugosh, Paul Houston, Spike Jorgensen, Walt Warfield, Art Stellar, and Fred Hartmeister.

15. Vision Building for the League
Recommended that a major part of the summer meeting be devoted to vision and strategic planning.

The following questions were presented:
What is our vision?
What kinds of activities, services, or products would we want as evidence of our progress toward the vision?
What resources do we need?
By 2010, what should we have accomplished?
It was suggested that an independent facilitator be selected.

16. PBS program on Brown:
Fred Hartmeister reported that the project was cancelled.

17. Location of Summer Board meeting:
The summer board meeting is to be planned to follow the Large City Superintendents’ annual meeting in the Washington, DC area.
Sunday, June 26, 2005, George Garcia will follow-up with location.

18. Nominations Committee:
The Nominations Committee report will be presented at the Annual meeting by Larry Dlugosh.

19. Review of the Annual Meeting procedures:
The program was reviewed by Jack McKay
